McKinney-Vento Community Outreach Program Earns NMSBA Excellence in Student Achievement Award

Congratulations to the McKinney Vento Community Outreach Program for Earning the New Mexico School Boards Association (NMSBA) Excellence in Student Achievement Award.

The McKinney Vento Program works to improve educational outcomes for the homeless students of Las Cruces Public Schools. They provide tutoring and basic needs.

They also assist families in receiving community support as well as providing family liaisons and social workers. All of this is done so that every child that is experiencing homelessness has a chance for success.

“An awesome component of this program is that many of the family liaisons are graduates of Las Public Schools, and some of my former students, Karla Solis-Holguin, Margarita Solis, Juliette Paez-Pearcy, and Ashley Cortez,” said Pamela Cort, Vice President of the Board of Education.

“The work they do out of the portables next to Valley View Elementary is invaluable.

The community is only as strong as its most vulnerable members the McKinney Vento program creates equity and hope in our community, and the work you do is priceless.

Thank you so much for your service,” added Cort.

*The McKinney-Vento Program is under the leadership of Ray Banegas, Federal Programs Coordinator.
